COVID-19 Update 3 December

Providing services under the COVID-19 Protection Framework

New Zealand has now moved to the Government’s COVID-19 Protection Framework.

Under the new Framework, in-person services must be delivered according to Ministry of Health guidance and providers are expected to follow relevant public health guidelines for each stage.

More information about this is available on the Ministry of Health website.

Telehealth remains enabled for most of our services at all three levels (Red, Orange, and Green), where clinically appropriate and accessible for the client. A full list of telehealth enabled services is available on our website.

Health services can't be withheld on the basis of a client's vaccination status.

More information about providing services in the COVID-19 environment is available on our website.

Treatment injury claims for COVID-19 vaccinations

We've recently noticed an increase in claims for treatment injuries related to COVID-19 vaccinations.

These are mostly being declined because they are expected side-effects of the vaccine, such as inflammation at the injection site. Claims are more likely to be accepted if they aren't usual or ordinary, for example cellulitis, septic arthritis, and anaphylaxis resulting in injury.

Our assessors carefully consider every claim, however those which don't meet the criteria for treatment injury cover take them away from assessing claims for severe reactions which may need immediate support.

As a reminder, treatment injury cover requires a client to have been physically injured in a way which isn't a necessary part or ordinary consequence of treatment.

You can find more information about the criteria and lodging a claim on our website.

The Ministry of Health website also includes a list of known side-effects from the Pfizer vaccine.
