Patricia and I take pleasure in responding to prompting by our friends of Tae Ora Tinana whanau to share a little about ourselves.

One grew up on the whanau farm in the Kawhia district, went to boarding school at Te Whaiti of te Urewera district. One returned home to care for Mum and Dad and the farm. Naturally a teenager got itchy feet and went awol, arrived in Tamakimakaurau, sowed wild oats, responded to Christian values which interrupted a downhill slide into debauchery, met and married my darling wife.

We raised a family and served our youth in hostel parenting. These social services and caregiving gave us gratification in steering our youth into education and career pathways. One gives praise to Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa for assisting one to obtain one's degree in social services and diplomas in theology and Tikanga. Tae Ora Tinana is an agency for promoting Maori professionals in delivering health and fitness to all peoples and especially to educate our people in living a healthy lifestyle.

Whaea Pat Barlow

Tena kotou katoa. Ko Patricia Isabelle toku ingoa. Ko Ngati Whaatua te iwi, ko Maamari te waka, ko Taita te Marae ki Taakawira.

I was born in Dargaville, raised and educated in Kaikohe and Te Tii. Attended New Plymouth Girls’ High and worked for the New Zealand Post and Telegraph.

I met and married William in 1966, lived and started a family in Hamilton and dabbled with business opportunities until God called us into hostel management with United Maori Mission – I was Matron while William studied Theology. We spent eighteen years with the U.M.M, while I developed skills in various areas of development, specialising as a seamstress with professionalism in the drape and curtain industry.

It is a privilege at this stage in life to be associated with Tae Ora Tinana in our capacity as kaumatua and kuia, but more importantly to be consultants in an advisory and leadership capacity.

Back in the day I graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia and then worked at Mackay Base, Clermont, Royal Brisbane, St Andrews and Wesley hospitals before beginning private practice in 1996. I owned a sports and spinal clinic within a medical centre in Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane for nearly 11 years prior to returning home to Aotearoa in 2008. I have worked with many sporting teams in Australia including the Brisbane Bullets Basketball team, Brisbane Broncos RLFC and was the official team physiotherapist for the Queensland Under 19 Women’s Netball team from 1996 - 2001. Now living in Ahipara I look after our warriors at Te Rarawa RUFC and also help out with our U19 representative teams in Northland.

In 2008 I opened a private practice in Ahipara, Aotearoa located on the shoreline of 90 Mile Beach not far from our well known left point break at Shipwreck Bay. In 2011 I graduated with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Physiotherapy (Endorsed in Musculoskeletal) with distinction from the University of Otago, Dunedin.

In 2012 I obtained a Masters in Manipulative Physiotherapy (Otago) with distinction and conducted research investigating injuries in Waka Ama. I am a current PhD candidate with my thesis titled ‘Huarahi Hauora’ in which we are exploring an indigenous approach to improving the health outcomes for Maori in Aotearoa. When I'm not working you'll find me diving for paua/cray’s, surfing, fishing or spending time with whanau/friends and doing all things Maoritanga.

Kate Haswell

Kia ora koutou katoa. Ko Kate Haswell toku ingoa. Ko Ngaati Te Ataa te iwi, ko Tainui te waka, ko Tahuna te Pa.Kate was born in Tamaki Makaurau and grew up in rural Aotearoa. She has tribal affiliations to Ngati Te Ata. Kate is a graduate of the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago. Further qualifications include Bachelor of Science, with award of senior prize in biochemistry, University of Auckland, Postgraduate Diploma in Manipulative Physiotherapy and Master of Health Science, Honours, First Class, Auckland Institute of Technology.

Kate is currently undertaking doctoral studies at Auckland University of Technology investigating physical findings in patients with lumbo-sacral radiculopathy. Her current role at the University is Associate Dean (Maori Advancement). Her research is with colleagues John Gilmour and Barbara Moore at Gilmour & Associates Physiotherapy, Herne Bay.

Lynda Kirkman

E nga Iwi o Nga Motu, e nga Iwi o nga hau e wha, e tu ake ana ki te mihi atu ki a koutou katoa,no reira haere nga mate o te wa, haere, haere, haere. Lynda is of Te Atiawa and Ngati Pakeha descent. Lynda is a long standing kaitiaki having recently stood down as chairperson, a post she held since the group formation of the group, dating back to 1997. Lynda has experience in private practice, having a clinic based in New Plymouth which included leading exercise programmes for Older Adult. She has also worked as Physiotherapist at Capital & Coast DHB, in the Porirua Community. Lynda now works has a contractor for Laura Fergusson Trust, Wellington. Lynda also has the privilege of working for Ngati Te Whiti Health for several years delivering an exercise and education programme to kaumatua and kuia. This experience lead me to become involved with the NZSP and eventually Tae Ora Tinana

Grant Mawston

Grant Mawston is a senior lecturer in the Department of Physiotherapy and a co-director of the Health & Rehabilitation Research Institute. He has a particular interest in exercise-based rehabilitation and neuromuscular control of the lumbar spine. Prior to joining AUT University, Grant worked in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy and was the physiotherapist for New Zealand Gymnastics team over a number of years. Grant currently has an active role in clinical practice and has been involved in the recent establishment of the Cardiopulmonary Pre-operative Exercise Testing Unit for the Waitemata District Health Board.

Ann McKellar

Ann also grew up in rural New Zealand, in the small town of Otarahonga. She studied at the School of Physiotherapy at Otago. Ann is currently the Professional Advisor of physiotherapy services at Rotorua Hospital. Her main area of interest is Woman’s Health and she is the chairperson of the Woman’s and Men’s Pelvic Health SIG. Ann is one of the founding members of founding members of Tae Ora Tinana, being part of the bicultural group that formed in 1997.

Jess Radovanovich

Jess graduated from Otago University with a BPhty in 2003 and gathered experience working in a Traumatic Brain Injury service (Maori Health provider), Private Practice (locums) and in Whangarei Hospital (Orthopaedics, Outpatients, Medical and Surgical). In 2006 she found her niche in Paediatrics at the Child Health Centre and have been there ever since. The Child Health Centre covers all of Northland including remote areas. Jess completed a Masters of Bioethics and Health Law (distinction) in 2011. She main interests are children, whanau and community and in how physiotherapy can be a useful part of health care and wellbeing discussions. Jess is also a member of the Professional Standards and National Executive.

Ulima Tofi

Ulima was born in Gisborne, of Rongowhakaata, Ngati Maniapoto, and Samoan descent. He graduated from AUT in 2007 and has been fortunate enough to be the physiotherapist for IRB 7 series, International test Rugby, Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup, as well as sporting posts overseas with professional rugby and league teams. Having recently returned home to Aotearoa he is enjoying being back serving his South Auckland community his special interests include sport and injury rehabilitation and prevention, youth and elderly physiotherapy and health promotion. Ulima is is looking forward to his new role as part of Tae Ora Tinana.
