    PNZ Membership Categories

As most members will be aware Physiotherapy New Zealand (PNZ) has a subscription year from 1 January to 31 December, with members asked to choose from a number of membership categories when renewing their annual membership.

On occasion new membership categories are added, such as the Affiliate Member category added in 2019 (for anyone engaged in the business of physiotherapy or an interested member of the public, who is not a registered physiotherapist).

Members’ selection of membership categories is based on an honesty-based system, meaning members select the category which best describes them at the time of renewal. PNZ membership has worked this way for a number of years and it’s a great reflection on the profession that it can operate this way.

PNZ does not monitor members, in terms of the membership categories they select. Nor do we follow-up with members who may have selected an incorrect category. Instead members are reminded of The Physiotherapy Standards Framework, which provide a benchmark of minimum standards expected of registered physiotherapists in New Zealand.

The Aotearoa New Zealand Physiotherapy Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct is built on several principles including trustworthiness and integrity (The Physiotherapy Standards Framework, page 13). This highlights that physiotherapists act with integrity in all professional activities (page 25).

If you’re unsure of the PNZ membership category to select each year, please choose that which best describes you at the time of renewal while adhering to The Physiotherapy Standards Framework.

    Membership Cancellation and Refund Policy

Membership of Physiotherapy New Zealand (PNZ) is an annual membership and therefore no membership refunds are made throughout the year unless under extraordinary circumstances.

Applications for such refunds must be made in writing to PNZ and all applications will be considered on a case by case basis. The decision made by PNZ will be final.

Any refund of membership fees may incur an administrative fee which will be deducted before membership fees are refunded.

If your membership is paid directly by your employer to PNZ, any refunds will be made from PNZ to your employer not you as an individual.

    Payment Method

Payment can be made by credit card, debit card or account to account (online) transfer. Please note that we can only accept Visa or MasterCard for payments by card, with credit card payments incurring a 2% transaction fee. Payment by cheque is not available as our bank removed this as a method to receive or make payments from 31 May 2021.

    2024 Subscriptions Changes

There are a number of changes to PNZ member subscriptions for 2024, including new membership categories and an overall rate increase. This is the first time core rates have changed in a decade, during which time the cost of living has increased. While rates have been maintained in recent years, like many organisations PNZ is facing rising costs and has been experiencing negative budgets.

Even so, the decision to increase rates has not been taken lightly and has come following an independent review of subscriptions as part of our organisational strategy. Having consulted members an increase is now required to ensure we can continue our work we know is important to members, including being the united voice of physiotherapy, particularly through the current health sector changes.

    PNZ Membership Categories

    • Full time Early Bird membership for 2024 is $719.10 – up 16% on last year. This price hasn’t changed for ten years, during which time the cost of living has increased by almost 30% (rbnz.govt.nz).
    • Part time Early Bird membership, for people working 11 to 30 hours per week, is $395.51. Although 30 hours per week is 75% of what is generally considered full time work (40 hours), this has been kept closer to half the full time rate for 2024.
    • A new very low part time membership rate has been introduced, for members wanting to stay in the profession but working 10 hours or less as a physiotherapist each week.
    • There is a new third year graduate rate to further support members entering the profession.
    • Rate changes have also been made to the affiliate (from 49% to 50% of the full time rate), physiotherapy assistant (from 14% to 25% of the full time rate), and overseas (from 22% to 25% of the full time rate) membership categories.
    • Rates for undergraduate physiotherapy students are $0 and remain at 10% of the full time rate for retired and 25% of the full time rate for non-earner membership categories.

    Insurance

Insurance will again be available for members through BMS for 2024. This includes Professional Indemnity and Public & Products Liability Insurance. Pricing for 2024 insurance cover with BMS is available here. Each year PNZ and BMS review the insurance inclusions and costs to ensure the cover offered remains competitively priced and provides comprehensive cover. Please ensure you read your renewal notice, Policy Wording and your Schedule for more information about cover.

In helping to arrange this insurance for our members PNZ is acting for BMS Risk Solutions (NZ) Limited (BMS), FSP 696531, NZBN 9429047279339. This insurance policy is issued by BMS under a binder arrangement with Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s. No advice is provided by BMS and BMS has not considered whether the insurance is suitable for your particular objectives, needs or financial situation. Please read the Policy Wording and any Disclosure Statement before making any decision about purchasing this policy. PNZ may receive a percentage of the commission paid to BMS by the insurer and/or a fee per policy.

    Ngā mihi nui

As always, thank you for being part of PNZ. We’re committed to supporting members and appreciate subscription increases are undesirable. Renewals for 2024 membership opened on 13 November 2023, with Early Bird rates available until 12 December. A video about these changes from our outgoing PNZ President is below.

Answers to possible questions about 2024 PNZ Member Subscriptions are also available here.

    Subscription Review

Part of PNZ Strategy 2021 - 2025, determined with input from members, considers whether our subscription model is appropriate and what changes might be needed in the future.

To address this an independent review of subscriptions commenced in 2021, and a review document shared with Branch and Special Interest Group leaders as well as the wider membership for feedback.

A resulting Subscription Model Design Report was then accepted by the PNZ Executive in 2022, with subscriptions remaining unchanged until now to acknowledge the impact of COVID-19.

Looking at previous PNZ’s remuneration surveys, as a proportion of average full-time earnings full-time Early Bird subscription fees for next year are the same as in 2014, at 0.9%.
